A little bit about the Back to Basics Homestead

Back to Basics Homestead is a family journey on the East Coast of Canada.  We've recently moved from our Urban Homestead to our new Country Homestead.

We started with planting a small garden in 2007 and never looked back. We've expanded that first garden yearly and learned many new skills.  Our goal is to slow down and enjoy life while bringing valuable life lessons to our young son and daughter.  We can do this by living a more sustainable, green and viable lifestyle.

We started our lifestyle change while living in what we loosely called our urban homestead. We were definately on the right path in converting our little slice of city home, but right after our daughter was born, we bought a beautiful house on 2 acres that also includes an in-law suite that my retired, winter traveling parents call home.  We took the winter to settle in with the new addition to our family as well as make plans for our future here in beautiful Sainte-Marie de Kent, New Brunswick.

Watch our trials and tribulations as we convert this blank slate into a small hobby farm where we can be as self sufficient as possible using both old methods and new technology.  We will cover all aspects of transforming our Country Homestead. We will share our lessons learned and articles relating to sustainable living covering topics ranging from composting to alternative energy and household energy saving tips.

The primary goal of this blog is to document the change to a more sustainable and self sufficient living environment for our children.  The blog is meant to not only help us share our experiences, but to also receive help from those who have gone down this road to live a prosperous sustainable living.

Your comments and questions are greatly appreciated. We will make every attempt to answer each question in a quick and timely fashion
